Place:Oslo, NorwayClient:owners of the houseArchitect:Space Group OsloScope of work:interior advisory, curtains and carpetsDate:2011 -2013Inside Outside was approached by the architects to design several curtains for a private house overlooking the Oslo fjord.Together with the architects, Space Group, the owners created a modern home based on Norwegian ship building of horizontal concrete and steel planes with vertical planes of glass. The resulting ‘free section’ was the starting point for the designs by Inside Outside. The openness and transparency in the glass façades that was intended to be liberating can be limiting when permanent. During daytime, you can enjoy the view and sunlight, but at night time the glass becomes a huge, black reflecting surface. There is little control over light reflections, temperature, privacy or intimacy. Inside Outside reintroduced flexible boundaries between spaces: ranging from total seclusion, to partial openings and near transparencyat the same time respecting and maintaining the architecture and the use of the spaces within. The four curtains use light and translucent layers as well as heavy opaque ones to create new perceptions of texture, light, sound and color. They break open at specific moments through perforations, cuts, slits and windows, allowing the outside in.In the dining area, the 5,5m high white cotton curtain allows the owners to choose the amount of privacy they need. A large transparent circular window frames the spectacular view and can be zipped out to allow fresh air in when the doors are opened. Sections of “tuxedo pleating” add a sophisticated touch to this robust object and refer to the owner’s sartorial interest. The custom made carpet with a ‘larger than life’ image of grass also by Inside Outside, brings the surrounding green into the house and connects the dining area to the lounge. Here two yellow silk curtains and a silver faux leather textile wall enclose the sitting area, making the space intimate. Semicircular windows in the silk curtains allow views in and out to the landscape and the rest of the house. The lounge is separated from the media room/ playing area by a thick textile “wall”. The tough outer side of silver faux leather is softened with yellow velour padded together with 168 buttons to create a soft boundary while complying with the acoustic demands. On the first floor the library’s perforated curtain is a delicate screen that filters light in, and provides the owner with privacy when desired. The 11864 circular perforations together suggest the foliage of a tree, which creates a dialogue with the site. The light penetrating through these perforations creates an ever-changing play of reflections on floor and walls inside during daytime and livens up the façade window overlooking the street during the night.Inside Outside continues with advisory on walls and floor finishes in the bedroom section of the house.Team Inside Outside:Petra Blaisse with Peter Niessen, Rabia Zuberi, Marieke van den Heuvel, Izumi Sato, Francesca Sartori and Laura van Santen.
