To increase ticket sales and revenue, the San Diego Symphony sought to transform the historic Joan & Irwin Jacobs Music Center in downtown San Diego into a contemporary, engaging public space. Gensler’s approach for modernizing the Symphony’s existing amenities while maintaining the grandeur of its historic hall was to enhance the original Rococo architecture by neutralizing the interior palette and allowing the architectural elements to shine. Updates to the hall include built-in bars in the Upper and Lower Halls, theatrical lighting, integrated AV systems and new interior finishes throughout, reviving the hall to its previous grandeur.
