Leeds Station, a historic multimodal transport interchange that serves 30 million passengers a year, is set to undergo a massive modernisation program. Gensler’s master planning role involves leveraging this modernisation program to spur regeneration for Leeds as a city as well as for the wider region, while also delivering a critical piece of the Northern Powerhouse strategy for the redevelopment of the UK. This complex urban renewal project required key considerations including preserving the existing history and fabric of both the station and the city, while also integrating many new transport links such as HS2 and the Northern Powerhouse railway services, as well as balancing and understanding the interests of many different stakeholders.
