MoMA’s multi-year expansion project had three comprehensive drivers: increase gallery space to exhibit the diverse collection in new interdisciplinary ways; provide visitors with a more inclusive experience; and better connect the Museum to the urban fabric of the city. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler, the overall expansion yields a net increase in MoMA’s gallery space of one third, to approximately 165,000 square feet. The design optimized current spaces to be more flexible and technologically sophisticated, and integrates the museum’s significant architectural history with a more open dialogue between interior and exterior spaces. In addition to redesigning classrooms in the Cullman Education Center, Gensler also designed the new Marron Atrium-facing Crown Creativity Lab which is an experimental space that supports MoMA’s dynamic educational programs.
