In relocating its Austin office, an initial study of Santa Clara-based NVIDIA’s work modes revealed that staff members were accustomed to a silo environment, in stark contrast to the company’s vision of collaboration. The design team’s kit-of-parts allowed NVIDIA to be involved in the selection of various workstation styles, resulting in a flexible space that is 100 percent open plan with primarily low-paneled workstations. Centralized formal gathering and conference areas and enclosed collaboration pods are interspersed throughout. The relaxed, yet energetic space provides a balance between heads-down focus work and group collaboration that flexibly supports employees’ sense of accomplishment and identity.
