An aggressive schedule, the desire for LEED® certification, and a goal of reducing energy consumption by 30 percent are just some of the challenges presented by the two-phase modernization and renovation of this five-story courthouse and nine-story federal building on the island of O’ahu. The project’s first phase, a U.S. Courthouse renovation completed in January 2015, encompassed renovation of eight federal and magistrate courtrooms and 12 federal/magistrate judges chambers. Phase II of the project will consolidate 57 government agencies in a U.S. Federal Building modernization. For this, Gensler is restacking all functions to increase efficiencies and redefine the circulation – formerly a maze of corridors – to help orient visitors and employees. A new nine-story atrium will bring much-needed daylight deep into the building; and a new glass entry pavilion will consolidate the main entries for both functions.
