Gensler created a master plan for Harold Ickes Homes, a former public housing high-rise located in Chicago’s South Loop on the city’s Near South Side. Now known as Southbridge, the new mixed-use, mixed-income, and transit-oriented development calls for approximately 877 units of mixed-income housing and 72,000 square feet of retail space. Higher density development was located near the new L Station, with a mixture of six-story buildings, townhomes, and walk-up apartments. The plan includes a new public plaza that builds on community assets and merges an existing park with a proposed recreation field, all anchored by a new community recreation center. The master plan was formally adopted by the Chicago Plan Commission, with Phase 1 scheduled to start in the spring of 2019.
