WillowTree’s new workspace in a historic Durham mill celebrates the authentic character of the original building while simultaneously reinforcing the company’s forward-minded, generative culture. A search for a space to expand in Durham led Charlottesville-based app development company, WillowTree, to a beautiful old mill building featuring an ideal third floor that provides the perfect place to support growth. WillowTree engaged Gensler to design a workplace that balances focused and collaborative spaces to optimize team flow and productivity. The tactical design team utilized Gensler’s Workplace Performance Index and visioning sessions to inform a cultural vision for “a walk through the woods”—a design concept crafted to make team members feel grounded in their environment, inspired to grow, and rejuvenated when they leave each day.
