Gensler has transformed a large, defunct office building into an innovative high school facility for Wiseburn USD and Da Vinci Schools. Once a secretive engineering facility for a military contractor, it is now a hyper-adaptable learning facility that houses three independently run public charter schools. Instead of hallways of fixed classrooms, the airy interior space flows with neighborhoods of teaching spaces organized around hubs of vibrant collaborative areas that support a flexible integration of project-based and STEM curriculum. At the heart of each school is a large commons area that is completely unprogrammed, ready to accommodate everything from student project work and presentations, to group activities. A four-story atrium interconnects the three distinct schools and shared community space on the ground floor.
