Sydney’s annual Vivid festival is always a highlight on the events calendar, and none more so than this year with the announcement ofSemi Permanentat Carriageworks in 2023. Part of this year’s Vivid and running from 31 May until 2 June, it’s the largest and longest-running creativity and design festival in the southern hemisphere. And this year’s jam-packed program is set to ignite your imagination with a highlight of the best of Asia Pacific’s design and creative minds. Featuring three days chock full of keynote talks, panel discussions, workshops, exhibitions, demonstrations, installations and more, this year’s focus speaks to the universal theme of ‘Reformation’. With opportunities to attend talks and events from leading visionaries across all manner of mediums, such as graphic, product, spatial and motion design, filmmaking, photography, illustration, publishing, writing, advertising, animation, Web3, and visual data—Semi Permanent is a must for anyone with even a cursory interest in the creative fields.Understandably, the program is broad and immersive, and can be overwhelming to navigate. Speculative architect and filmmaker, Los AngelesRenowned film director and speculative architect Liam Young will launch his new project The Great Endeavour at Semi Permanent: a proposal to create a planetary-wide network of carbon capture machines that will become humanity’s largest-ever construction project—our generation’s moon landing. It represents a new form of infrastructure born out of a scale of global cooperation never seen before and demonstrates the power of creativity to shape our future.2. Mona Chalabi. Visual data journalist, New YorkUsing words, colour and sound, Mona Chalabi rehumanises data to better help us understand our world and the way we live in it. In her first appearance in Australia, the Emmy-nominated data editor and illustrator will showcase how we can remove the ‘numb’ from numbers.3. Semi Permanent Art & Design Book FairAfter its launch last year, the Semi Permanent Art & Design Book Fair will return to this year’s festival. Seb Chan. Director, ACMI, MelbourneAs director of ACMI, Seb Chan has been integral to the Melbourne institution’s $40 million renewal which shaped it into an award-winning, multi-platform museum. In his keynote talk, Seb will draw on his digital transformation expertise to reveal how companies can bridge digital and physical customer experiences.5. Mikaela Jade. Founder, Indigital, CanberraMikaela Jade, the founder of Indigenous Australian edu-tech company, Indigital, seeks to develop innovative ways to digitise and translate knowledge and culture from remote and ancient communities, exploring how it applies to the future through the metaverse and Web3.6. Sinéad Burke. Founder, Tilting The Lens, DublinIrish writer, academic and disability activist Sinéad Burke is the founder of Tilting The Lens, a consultancy that asks: ‘Is this accessible?’ Burke supports clients—including Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Netflix, and Pinterest—in moving from awareness to action, accelerating systemic and cultural changes for a world that is more accessible and equitable for everyone. Her work has been featured and recognised byVogue,The Financial TimesandVanity Fair.7. Beijan Berahimi. Designer & Founder, FISK, PortlandOne of the most exciting names in design today is Iranian-American Bijan Berahimi of Portland-based FISK, which has completely upended the design studio model with a community-focused business that’s equal parts gallery, store, and creative collaborator, known for his work with Nike, Toro y Moi, Harvard and more.8. Megha Kapoor. Head of Editorial Content,VogueIndia, MumbaiIn September 2021, Australian stylist Megha Kapoor was headhunted by Anna Wintour to helmVogueIndia and has since been instrumental in driving the publication’s rapid expansion both globally and within the subcontinent. Under Megha’s direction, the new era ofVogueIndia seeks to champion the spirit of creativity in India, spark conversations around challenging subjects, and celebrate the diversity of the subcontinent whilst establishing a new visual language. Megha will return to Sydney at Semi Permanent to discuss the creative transformation of the publication and discuss the vibrancy and breadth of India’s creative community.9. Mikaela Stafford. Motion graphics artist, MelbourneMikaela Stafford is a self-taught 3D motion graphics artist, and one of the most exciting in the field. Mikaela’s work explores themes of hypothetical futures and she is particularly interested in the complex relationships between humans, technology and nature. Her talk will look into this next era of digital artmaking.10. Chris Yee. Artist, illustrator and animator, SydneyChris Yee is an artist, illustrator, designer and animator that believes in the power of character and storytelling and is heavily drawn to constructing narratives ranging from the humorous to the monstrous and macabre.
