This ethos is at the heart of theAffordable Art Fair, a global event series that seeks to disrupt the buying process by making it easier than ever to discover emerging and established artists and find a work of art that resonates with you, no matter your budget. After a successful launch inMelbourne in 2019, the Affordable Art Fair is returning to Australia’s cultural capital from September 1-4. The four-day event will spotlight local contemporary artists across a spectrum of mediums and genres. The Fair’s Asia Pacific managing director Stephanie Kelly Gordine is passionate about reigniting interest in art, especially given the two-year period that saw galleries close their doors. “Now more than ever, we need to support our art ecosystem and the events industry to create those magical moments when people fall in love with art,” she says.Ahead, Stephanie Kelly Gordine shares 10 emerging artists that belong on your radar, all of whom will be exhibiting at the Melbourne event. Discover her top picks below.(left artwork) Confusing Times by Celina KlohkCelina KlohkGraduating from RMIT with a degree in fine arts, German-Australian artist Celina Klohk approaches her craft from a multidisciplinary standpoint.  Klohk’s work delves into the anxiety that stems from life in the digital era, utilising various media to develop fictional narratives that reshape experiences of mundanity.“Celina’s stylistic representation of topical motifs in combination with her painterly styles set her apart at a young age, says Gordine. Jumping between cyber-culture and traditional portraiture, her paintings transform everyday moments into something far more exciting.Works by Arite KannavosArite KannavosMelbourne-based artist Arite Kannavos harnesses the subconscious in her work, utilising vivid colour and abstract imagery to create vibrant pieces that leave the viewer to ponder. Kannavos is also a textile designer and creates prints for the homewares industry both in Australia and abroad.“Existing somewhere between surrealism and abstraction, Arite’s paintings are both contemplative and joyful. They are the perfect addition to your living room to gaze at after a busy day in the office,” Gordine says.Liddle Salt Lake and Fire by Bronwyn Raven PurrulaBronwyn Raven PurrulaBronwyn Raven Purrula is an Indigenous artist whose intricate work extends beyond the canvas. Finding inspiration in nature during Melbourne’s first lockdown, Purrula collected stones from around her neighbourhood which formed the basis of her ‘Sacred Stones’ collection—a body of work that reflects Purrula’s innovative approach to art.“A well-known artist connected to the Arrernte Peoples in Central Australia, Brownyn has painted several totems and has a rich body of vibrant artworks that seem to respond to her role as a dancer in their dynamism and presence. This is an artist to keep an eye out for at Affordable Art Fair Melbourne,” Gordine advises.Origination Cerulean by Cristina PopviciCristina PopoviciWith an affinity for the abstract, Cristina Popovici’s works are an energetic display of colour and texture. Utilising an array of mediums, from glass paint to oils, Popvici’s pieces retain a  sense of playfulness and vibrancy.“Highly contemporary and vibrant in nature, Cristina’s works are the must-have addition to any contemporary home and are highly sought after,” Gordine muses. If I Was A Garden II by Emily PerssonEmily PerssonEmily Persson’s approach to art runs in the family. Following in the footsteps of her great grandmother, a palette knife artist, Persson is one of the few palette knife artists continuing the tradition, depicting detailed landscapes and seascapes in her work.“Any lover of seascapes like myself should not walk past multi-generational artist Emily Pearson’s pensive paintings—her works are founded in the heritage imbued by her great grandmother’s palette knife that she still uses. This classical methodology holds contemporary significance, and looking at her works is. an enticing experience,” says Gordine.Sanja by Michael BondMichael BondTo describe Noosa-based Michael Bond’s pieces as energetic is to understate their vibrancy and vivacity. Often contrasted with dark backgrounds, Bond’s pieces are explosions of colour, the broad brushstrokes complemented by flecks and drips of paint that are reminiscent of the natural world.According to Gordine, “it is hard to believe Michael Bond is a self-taught artist when you stand in front of his awe-inspiring abstract expressionist paintings. His larger scale works evoke an explosion of colour that embraces multiple layers upon closer inspection. Michael has already established a strong following and his work would be a highlight of anyone’s collection.”Luminare and Lustre by Miranda SmithMiranda SmithHarnessing the versatility and complexity of light as a medium, Hong Kong and Melbourne-based artist Miranda Smith uses light in conjunction with digital print, sculpture, and painting to create immersive and challenging experiences for viewers of her work.“Having recently graduated from RMIT as an Honours graduate in 2021, Miranda has already established a well-developed practice since her artistic career began in 2020. She was previously based in Hong Kong where she held a solo exhibition with Gallery Jeeum and will soon be picked up by a Melbourne gallery, no doubt,” Gordine predicts.Ruby Swann by Renee BrodersRenee BrodersWith a style that is equal parts eccentric, playful, and contemporary, Renee Broders is a portraiture artist whose work merges the real with the abstract. Reimagining the faces of her friends, family and strangers, Broders uses vibrant colour to tap into human emotions.“As an exciting portraiture artist, Renee has a distinct and timeless style that merges historical oil techniques with bold, modern splashes of colour. Already making her work on the Australian art scene, she is one to jump in quick and add to your collection now,” recommends Gordine.Candied Kumquats by Sarah AbbottSarah AbbottBased heavily on the beauty and nuance of nature, Sarah Abbott’s still lifes depict seemingly unassuming flora in figurative and bold ways. A strong focus on Australian botanicals is central to Abbott’s work, making her pieces the perfect addition to the quintessentially Australian home.“With strong roots in interior design, Sarah’s works are a great addition to a cozy home complete with endless meal inspiration from her aerial views of stylised table settings”, Gordine says.Untitled (Kangaroo at Night) by Leroy McLaughlinLeroy McLaughlinA Yorta Yorta artist from Echuca, Leroy McLaughlin is an artist whose works are complex, intricate and interwoven with stories of his Indigenous heritage. Having exhibited at Museum Victoria and won numerous awards since commencing his artistic pursuits, McLaughlin is an emerging artist to watch.“This year Leroy was awarded the Dennis Thorpe Award. Painting with the purpose to share his story and create art that others will enjoy. His works are highly detailed with complex and interwoven brushwork, don’t miss out on the chance to add his work to your home,” urges Gordine.Want moreVogue Living?
