After arecord number of female finalistslast year, the Archibald Prize in 2022 has reached another significant milestone. This year marks the highest known number of entries from Aboriginal artists and a record number of Aboriginal finalists in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes.England-born, Sydney-based artist Claus Stangl took out this year’s Archibald Packing Room Prize for his 3D-style portrait of New Zealand film director, writer and actor Taika Waititi. Stangl said the concept is a homage to both his and Waititi’s passion for cinema. It is the fourth time Stangl has entered the prize and the second time he had been a finalist. With 816 entries across three prizes, the Archibald’s 52 finalists showcase a range of concepts and subjects.
