Contemporary art lovers, meet your future sanctuary. In the latest chapter of the Victorian Government’s $1.7 billion transformation of the Melbourne arts precinct, the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) has revealed the team of architects who will be spearheading the creation of theNGVContemporary, set to be Australia’s largest gallery of art and design. After winning a country-wide competition with their concept design, multi-award winning architect Angelo Candalepas will lead a team of 20 firms in the construction of the new Victorian landmark, currently estimated to span 30,000 square metres.“Melbourne is the cultural capital of this nation,” said Candalepas in an official statement, “and NGV Contemporary marks its next great offering to the world. Art and design matters to all Australians: it speaks to who we are as a community.”“This project signals Australia as a great contemporary nation with a significant creative force. This building will be a beacon of the culture of our time.”Sign up to theVogue Living newsletterInspired by the Ancient Greek idea ofomphalos(centre of the earth), Candalepas’s concept for the NGV Contemporary begins with a central, spherical hall, stretching upwards for approximately 40 metres; visitors on all levels will be able to move through the gallery along a spiralling path encircling the hall, until they reach the rooftop terrace. Here, guests can enjoy the man-made and natural amenities, including a café, sculpture garden, and vistas of the city and the Yarra Ranges.“This dynamic and exciting design for NGV Contemporary creates a unifying civic space that all visitors will remember,” said director of the NGV and competition jury member, Tony Ellwood AM. “With its uplifting and generous architecture, this design provides all Victorians a timeless building for arts and culture that will be loved for generations.”“I congratulate Angelo Candalepas and Associates for their outstanding contribution to this competition and for sharing their special vision for NGV Contemporary with the world.”Below, take an exclusive look at Candalepas’s concept design for the NGV Contemporary.Daytime render of winning concept design for NGV Contemporary by Angelo Candalepas and Associates, and public green space, facing south.
