However, almost as important as the dancers are the set and costume designers who elevate ballet performances to new heights.Esteemed artists have long been associated with the world’s finest ballet companies. Pablo Picasso painted the front-cloth mural for Ballets Russes performance ofParadein 1917. Henri Matisse created costumes forRouge et Noirin 1939, also performed by Ballets Russes, which involved him pinning paper shapes onto ballerinas. Cecil Beaton designed the costumes and sets forLes Sirènesin 1946, starring Margot Fonteyn.The Display,photographed by Jeff BusbyWhen The Australian Ballet stagedThe Displayin 1964, its first production with an all-Australian cast, leading local artist Sidney Nolan created the sets and costumes (his lyrebird is pictured above). Famous for his stylised painting of notorious bushranger Ned Kelly, Nolan found working with the ballet a moving experience – when he saw his work professionally lit for the first time he said he was entranced by “the deep, rich, mysterious gloom of sunlight-shafted Australian rainforest”.
