Recent Chinese urban development is booming in every large city, making each of them a new metropolis surpassing Hong Kong or New York. However, in this wave of urban construction, we can still find a dream within each passerby, even hidden at the depth of his soul. Every city has that similar skyline, almost identical, but so different at the same time. You arrive at this city like a glorious god, to find this new place so charming and amiable. Then you know that you are one with the city, you all come from earth, you are all earth, red like justice. Just as those red bricks, they come from the countryside, but one by one they built the building up to the sky. You see that circular structure? Just like us, always carried by the natural wheel of reincarnation. Everything you see orthogonal is made by us, the architecture that we design. Come, my glorious god! Let’s talk about Earth, about earth and life, and how they are one.
This project is designed by Kuan Wang for the 751 Int’l Design Festival during the 2015 Beijing Design Week. It is a large-scale outdoor interactional installation that combine art and architecture placed inside the 751 D-Park in Chaoyang district in Beijing.
First of all, it is a micro city. Based on the Manhattan-like strict orthogonal city plan, it combines the grid with the new Beijing CBD’s grandiose planning ideology, praise the willing to reach higher that is common to all human-kind from New York to Beijing.
Second, it is a landscape art. This installation used the red mud brick as the basic material, building up those miniature and simplified skyscrapers using the most traditional construction technique of modern china. By placing this micro modern city into the abandoned factory district of the 751 D-Park, it re-activate the area with this fusion of the traditional and the modern, at the same time of acting as a memorial for the “material of the Republic”, the traditional red mud brick that is no longer used anymore in the contemporary Chinese cities.
Third, unlike most “untouchable” piece of arts displayed in the district, this installation attracts interactions. The columns of brick varied in height from one to forty-seven layers, offering different possibilities for siting, standing, climbing, jumping or passing from one to another and playing around for visitors of all ages. Placed at the intersection of two main square of the Park, it becomes a privileged space for visitors to meet, rest and take photos, fanaticism of all Chinese tourists.
Forth, this installation is used as an exhibition space. Every tower holds a square poster at the top, displaying some of the most important works of KUAN architects. With variations in heights and sometimes in size, these panels recall somehow the huge advertising screens of the Time Square.
Finally, this installation echoes a previous project – Move, displaced on the same site during the Design Festival 2012. Move was an installation built with grey square bricks, and this time the “Micro Urban” continued to use the brick as the basic construction unit, prolonging the serial installations of the Brick Collection.
