form the architect : This is the 2nd house on the mountainside of Mt. Fuji. We can’t see the top of the mountain as it is too close, but there is forest which is part of Mt. Fuji on the south side, so we start from primitive shed roof which is like saluting to Mt. Fuji, On the other hand, we have 1-2m high snow in winter. So north entrance will be buried in snow during 1-2week. Then we suggested to fold the shed roof without changing the angle of roof to redesign how to fall rain and snow down.
This house is split by center terrace, which is extension of approach, to 2 volumes. Roof is folded in mountain fold over here, then snow falls down beside the approach to prevent entrance from being buried in snow. On the other side, roof valley folded gathers snow beside the parking space. When it’s raining you can see waterfall from the picture window which is opened beside valley folded roof. Regarding lounge space around wood stove, spaces are gently divided because of different ceiling height or valley folded ceiling.

Basically architecture has a lot of parameters for example the site condition, owner’s request, budget, and so on. But if we differentiate it by design such like this roof line and make handled parameters simple, owners is likely to participate the design. Regarding differentiated design, even if someone add change to it, basic rule never collapse, so we call it “plastic” design.
At this time the communication with roof line was intensified between owners and us, then more slopes or steps, which extend physicality of owners who like trekking or road cycling, are made in house like alternative nature. At south loft, you can feel ridge line of whole roof at once, and you can find this loft space connects 2 divided volumes.
While we are making a change to the roof line, we find mountain folded valley seems to be Japanese traditional gable “Hafu”, then we consider gable was developed from roof function to prevent entrance space from being buried in snow or rain.

We always try to involve a lot of people by design, to dig into behavior of primitive architectural style and to find how to invent new architecture from enormous architectural archives. As a result our architecture develops to not likely authentic architecture, which is like built in parallel world. We want to share this joy, which is how to find such old and new architectural style with a lot of people. We call it “alternative authenticity”.
