大约五年前起,我们开始讨论建筑和艺术关系的问题。同一时期我们也开始尝试策展的工作,到今天mür mür已经组织了十五场艺术展览。2022年底我们接受UCCA的委托,完成了“燃冉”艺术季首次线下展览的空间设计。展览场地选择在新天地壹号会所的老建筑里,有十五位青年艺术家和三位驻留艺术家的作品将在这里展出。
About five years ago, we started talking about the relationship between architecture and art. At the same time, we also began to try our curator-work. Today mür mür has organized fifteen art exhibitions. By the end of 2022, we were commissioned by UCCA to complete a space design for a very first exhibition called “Ranran” in Xintiandi. The exhibition venue was chosen in a very old building called Yihao Huisuo. Fifteen young artists and three resident artists would show their artpiece here.

Art,word and architecture
历史学家海因里希·沃尔夫林写道:“如果词语能够表述艺术作品最深的内容或想法,那么艺术本身就是多余的,所有的建筑物、雕塑和绘画就可以不用建造、不用加工、不用绘制。”沃尔夫林的话是在告诫,艺术的核心价值在于它所传达的情感、思想和体验,而不仅仅是物质形式。
The historian Heinrich Wolflin wrote: “If words can express the deepest content or idea of a work of art, then art itself is superfluous, and all buildings, sculptures and paintings can be built without construction, processing, or painting.” Wolflin’s words are a reminder about the core value of art lies in emotions, thoughts, and experiences it conveys, not just in material form.

但在现实场景里,艺术思想的传达和场所体验的传达常常错位。就像这个场地中,老建筑完整地保留了百年老宅的“公馆风貌”,这与参展艺术家作品中当代艺术的呈现方式有很大区别。空间设计需要成为连接两者新的中介。作为新的中介,空间需要“适度”地参与到老建筑和新艺术各自的呈现中。这个”适度“的度是什么呢?这是设计之初我们讨论最多的问题。它也可以换一个问法:空间是展览中的另一件展品,还是展览的一组背景?
Our site is an old venue, the building is an architecture of classicism. But the artists would show quite modern piece here. It‘s a conflict. As a new intermediary, our space design needs to be involved in the presentation of the old building and the new art. What role does it play?

在这里,我们希望呈出一种更加模糊和不确定的状态。艺术,建筑,环境被置入一个事物间相互影响,关系不断变化和流动的世界。正如“燃冉”艺术季”回环之歌“的主题:就像”一段悠扬往复的旋律,一簇流动的光芒,一种涌动的能量“。
Here, we want to present a more ambiguous and uncertain state. Art, architecture, and the environment are placed in a world where things interact with each other, and relationships are constantly changing and fluid. As the theme of the “Song of the Loop” in the “Burning Ran” art season: it is like “a melodious melody, a cluster of flowing light, a surge of energy”.

越往上越轻盈
The Higher,The Lighter
老建筑共三层。因为周边植物的遮挡,一层很暗,越往上光线越好。我们依据不同艺术作品对自然光的需求,将它们分成三组,置于一条回环向上的观展动线上。一层的展览空间被厚重的深灰色墙体隔断,自然光也被隔绝在外。然后,越往上越轻盈。到了三层,光线穿过白色纱帘均匀地撒入室内,成为展览永远流动着的迷人的底色。

The old building has three floors. Because of the obstruction of the surrounding plants, the 1st floor is very dark, the higher, the lighter. According to needs of different light towards different artworks, we divided them into three groups and placed them on a looping and moving line. The exhibition space on the first floor is separated by heavy dark gray walls, and natural light is also insulated. On the third floor, light flows evenly into the interior through the white gauze curtain, creating a fascinating backdrop for the exhibition to flow forever. The total experience is the higher, the lighter.

老建筑的元素同样参与在每一处空间体验中。从空中或洞口处,一盏复古吊灯或是一扇木花格窗便兀自出现在那里。类似符号的”拼贴“也是我们对立体主义,达达主义这些艺术先驱的致敬。在二层南侧露台我们创作了一朵”云“的装置。一片云朵形状轻盈的薄钢板从老建筑厚重的石柱间飘出,成为展览入口新的标志物。
Elements of old buildings are also involved in circulation. From the air or through the opening, a vintage chandelier or a wooden lattice window appears there. The symbolic-like “collage” is also our tribute to the pioneers of art such as Cubism and Dadaism. On the south terrace of the second floor, we created an installation of a “cloud”. A thin steel plate in the shape of a cloud floats out from among the heavy stone pillars of the old building, becoming a new symbol of the exhibition entrance.

近距离观察艺术家的工作是一次难得的机会。当代艺术最吸引我们的部分在于它并不依赖于一个“美的形式”,所以它才能在更大的尺度上对整个人类命运共同体“做功”。艺术的终极体验是语言无法触及的。语言面对的这种困难,来自艺术最有趣的部分在语言之外。如此说来,建筑最有趣的部分也可能在艺术之外。延续至今的现代主义建筑何时得以进入“当代”?这可能才是建筑的艺术性得以初见其面貌的那一刻。
A close look of the artist’s work is a rare opportunity. The most attractive part of contemporary art is that it does not depend on a “form of beauty”, so it can “work” the entire community with a shared future for mankind on a larger scale. The ultimate experience of art is beyond the reach of words. This difficulty with language comes from the fact that the most interesting part of art is outside of language. That said, the most interesting part of architecture may also lie outside of art. When did modernist architecture, which continues to this day, become “contemporary”? This may be the moment when the artistry of architecture first comes to fruition.
