St Kilda, an apartment in Melbourne, Australia, is located in a brutalist concrete building from the 1990s. Originally a dark and depressing land, it now has three bright bedrooms and a 20-square-metre balcony. Personalised items emphasise the family's personality and reflect the client's taste, with a bespoke gold bamboo rug in the living room inspired by their beloved Labrador and based on nature, ink and green hues.
Designed with the need for a mid-week break in mind, as well as privacy, the Fiona Lynch design studio softened the space with textured walls and selected soft materials. Green permeates the space, from furniture and curtains to kitchen countertops. The consistent hue provides sensory continuity between the living and master bedroom Spaces, resulting in a custom landscaped wall that was developed and designed by the client.
This focus on natural elements is reinforced in the kitchen, where geometric green-textured stones wrap the entire kitchen island. In this textured space, the island becomes another dramatic place, contrasting sharply with the heavy curtains in the rest of the apartment. With a hotel-like sense of cohesion and luxury, the interior layers subtly accentuate the rusticity intended in the building.
