Nestled beside the canal, on the outskirts of Monasterevin in County Kildare, is the Church of Oak Distillery. This site bears a rich historical connection to the town's industrial heritage, having served as a grain mill in its past. This historical link inspired the decision to guide visitors through fields of barley and tall grasses towards the new visitor centre, providing a tangible connection to its storied history.
Corten steel and fair-faced concrete play pivotal roles in this endeavour. Thedistinctive use of Corten steel adds a modern, weathered aesthetic, symbolizing the passage of time and echoing the industrial roots of the site. Meanwhile, fair-faced concrete contributes a contemporary touch, creating a harmonious juxtaposition between old and new. Together, these materials not only enhance the visual appeal of the Church of Oak Distillery but also serve as a testament to the thoughtful preservation and integration of historical and modern elements in the project.
While the modifications to the existing project layout are minimal, the avant-garde distillery makes a substantial impact on the town's character. It stands as a defining landmark along the Grand Canal's Blue Way. The primary goal throughout this project was to preserve the charm, texture, and historical essence as much as possible, ensuring that the contrasting new elements blend seamlessly with the original fabric.
