The Royal Library by SHL
The Royal Library in Copenhagen, famously known as the 'Black Diamond', is a remarkable architectural landmark on the city's waterfront. This extension, characterized by its black granite cladding and sleek, polished surfaces, represents a significant shift from traditional library designs. The building spans seven storeys plus a basement and is split by a vast glazed atrium, creating a central space that offers panoramic waterfront views and brings daylight deep into the library. With a range of cultural facilities including a café, bookshop, exhibition room, and a 600-seat hall, the library doubles its previous book capacity and provides numerous reading rooms. The use of materials like stone, steel, glass, wood, and coloured concrete emphasizes simplicity and elegance. Art plays an integral role in the library, with works by five artists enhancing its unique spaces, including the Lending Department Bridge and the Queen’s Hall.
