SPONGY PAVILION (Pursuit of Happiness)

The final project for the computer applications course (ARC 341).The project aims to apply the principles of biomimicry design by using computational design tools so as one of the biological systems is simulated and used to create a new architectural typology.

The site of the project is located in the space between building of hall A,B and building of hall C,D in ain shams university faculty of engineering.

01. CONCEPT

The design idea comes from studying the biological system of a sea sponge.

Sponges feed on water via stressing food particles. When water penetrates a sponge, little organisms like bacteria and protists are present. Inside the central chamber, neck cells catch and digest these food particles. Sponges can remove food particles from the water extremely efficiently.

Ostia is a gate that enables water to enter the sponge body and acts as valves to regulate water's flow into the spongokol, the water then flow as a current and exit from an upper hole in its body.
