Modern House with Bold Appearance Built in Amsterdam’s Nieuw-West District

The former police academy in Amsterdam’s Nieuw-West district has been redeveloped into a neighborhood with plots for private housing. The future residents had a clear vision for their home: a modern house with a bold appearance.

Designing for Character and Contrast

The design comprises a main volume with a sloped roof and a lower extension with a flat roof. This gives the house a distinct character, with the steep angle of the roof combined with the large dormer extending over two floors. The exterior of the house is finished entirely in hues of anthracite, while the interior is eclectic.

Materials for a Split-Level Home

The roof and facades on the upper floors are made of aluminum standing seam panels, while the plinth is constructed with anthracite masonry. A strip window circles the volume, separating the two parts and creating a lively interplay between the various spaces.
