Designed in 2017 for a Manhattan mother and daughter, this prefabricated cabin combines low-maintenance living with elegance. Its south-facing, expansive windows and cedar brise-soleil harmonize light and landscape. The interior, featuring rustic cedar, custom walnut millwork, and porcelain tiles, adds warmth and durability. This sustainable home perfectly blends indoor and outdoor living, epitomizing contemporary country life.

The Enchanting Cornwall Cabin

Perched on a steep slope, the Cornwall Cabin overlooks a lush valley in Northwestern Connecticut. This modern prefabricated cabin, a mere two-hour drive from Manhattan, offers a peaceful weekend retreat for a mother and her daughter. Spanning 1,500 square feet, it exemplifies simple, low-maintenance living. Inside, the compact floor plan smartly houses weekend essentials, while custom built-ins like storage spaces, benches, bookshelves, and bunk beds enhance both space and functionality.

Maximizing Views and Ventilation

Strategically placed, the cabin boasts uninterrupted southern valley views. Its linear structure, aligned East/West, features large windows and sliders on the southern side. These elements not only flood the space with daylight but also showcase the breathtaking scenery. The handmade cedar brise-soleil across this façade mitigates heat and glare. Moreover, in warmer months, the open sliders extend the living space outdoors. Screened openings encourage cross-ventilation, eliminating the need for artificial cooling. A covered patio, connected by a continuous deck to the entrance and carport, blurs the boundaries between inside and outside. In contrast, the northern side offers privacy with smaller windows, shielding against the nearby road.

The cabin’s material palette was chosen for low maintenance and natural integration. The exterior, clad in durable charred Accoya, presents a subtle texture that harmonizes with the environment. Inside, cedar ceilings and custom walnut millwork create a rustic yet warm ambiance, contrasting beautifully with the bright walls and countertops. Durable, large-format porcelain tiles withstand the rigors of country living.
