Los Angeles-based design and architecture firm, Design, Bitches, has just unveiled the inaugural boutique for Jean Dousset, the esteemed designer of lab-grown diamonds and fine jewellery, and great-great-grandson of Louis Cartier. Located on West Hollywood's La Cienega Boulevard, the flagship boutique is a defining moment in Jean Dousset's journey towards becoming a distinguished heritage lab-grown diamond brand. Collaborating closely with Dousset, Design, Bitches drew inspiration from the brand's essence, elegantly translating his dedication to ethically-sourced gems into a design that mirrors the evolution of diamonds from raw to dazzling.
Every element within the intimate 550-square-foot space, from the faceted steel storefront to the chiselled concrete table and undulating walls, has been custom-designed by Design, Bitches and locally fabricated in Los Angeles. The flagship's facade, adorned with faceted geometry and diamond-like displays, served as the starting point for Jean Dousset’s new logo and offers a glimpse of the transformative experience awaiting patrons within. Inside, guests progress through a spatial sequence that mirrors the meticulous crafting of lab-grown diamonds: cleaving, cutting, setting, and polishing.
An airy, light-filled space welcomes visitors, introducing them to Jean Dousset's six signature diamond cuts and ring designs. A middle zone allows for extended exploration of Jean Dousset's other jewellery lines, while a final and intimate salon provides a setting for more personal interactions with the sales team—where the magic of jewellery creation comes alive. This layered spatial design mirrors Dousset's Signature Stone®, discreetly nestled behind the centre stone of each engagement ring—a personal touch that imbues the jewellery with timeless significance.
Custom-designed displays offer visitors a unique and immersive experience, uniting artistic vision with local, meticulous craftsmanship. The discovery wall, a focal point of the boutique, showcases Jean Dousset's principal engagement ring designs, expertly illuminated to accentuate the brilliance of the Signature Stone®. Each display presents the style from three angles, including the back, offering a comprehensive view of Jean Dousset's extraordinary craftsmanship. A heritage wall adorned with historical photographs of Louis Cartier and significant milestones in Jean's family embraces the brand's legacy. This thoughtful integration of heritage with innovation underscores the personal connection and artistic expression embodied by the Jean Dousset brand.
The faceted steel storefront of the boutique, set with a glass of varying opacities, sets a striking first impression. At the entrance, an oversized crystalline form, meticulously polished from stainless steel, hangs from the ceiling above a chiselled concrete table—juxtaposing the diamond and the rough. Niches set into the undulating walls hold pedestals that rise like growing crystals to showcase each piece of jewellery. A palette of natural materials warms the space: renewable cork floors are soft underfoot, and cases gleam with polished nickel. Surfaces bear the mark of handcrafted care: LA-manufactured Portola lime wash finishes all the walls and ceilings, while custom wallpaper from the esteemed French brand Élitis enlivens the salon.
The design scheme represents the seamless fusion of technical expertise and shared design aspirations. Robust security measures are discreetly integrated into each display element. To achieve the intricate geometries of each sculptural piece—from the flowing walls to the faceted display tables—Design, Bitches orchestrated a tightly synchronised workflow, sharing 3D models with local fabricators. The entire project was realised in close partnership with Dousset himself.
Rebecca Rudolph, Co-Founder of Design, Bitches, reflects, "The Jean Dousset boutique is a testament to the brand's spirit: uncompromised and a canvas for boundless creativity. Our collaboration with Jean has been nothing short of liberating. Together, we forged a new path, driven by his passion for design, commitment to pushing craft boundaries, and determination to break down luxury space barriers."
