This project represents the office space of URBAN FUTURE DESIGN, situated in Shunde, Foshan, adjacent to a greenway along a street-front shop. The primary functional zones of the office space include the design office area, meeting spaces, management office area, leisure spaces, tea areas, and more. Due to the excellent natural light provided by the greenery along the street frontage, the primary design objective was to create distinct area divisions within the limited space, ensuring optimal sightlines for each area.

To begin with, the site was divided into service spaces and served spaces based on the frequency of usage. Spaces such as the office area and meeting rooms, which have extended occupancy, were categorized as served areas, while the remaining spaces were designated as service spaces. Considering the irregular nature of the site without a clear axis relationship, a circular spatial form was deemed more suitable for the location, allowing for a blurred directional sense of sightlines. This led to the creation of three circular served spaces alongside the remaining irregularly shaped service spaces. Additionally, furniture arrangements could be rotated around the center of these circles, providing more versatile sightlines for each area.

The challenge was to effectively establish clear spatial divisions, meet the independent requirements of the meeting spaces, and maintain unobstructed views of the outdoor scenery from every area. Given the on-site factors of sightlines and relatively low ceiling height, traditional “wall space” or “ceiling space” were deemed inadequate for spatial partitioning. Thus, the concept emerged to enhance spatial area perception through the understanding of human spatial behavior. By elevating the ground level of the service areas and creating the illusion of sunken served areas, the design achieved two objectives: it enhanced the formal sense upon entering these spaces and preserved the perceived height of the office area while maintaining visual connections with the outdoor landscape. The raised level was also adjusted to accommodate seating height, allowing each perimeter to serve as a flexible leisure area.

In addition to blurring the indoor-outdoor boundaries through the use of opening folding windows on the facade, filling passages and other areas with lush greenery creates a seamless transition of the outdoor landscape into the indoor environment. This results in an encompassing sensation of being surrounded by a forest, blurring the distinction between the inside and outside. Moreover, the raised greenery ground increases the perceived visual distance between different areas, effectively eliminating any feelings of confinement within the space.

For the overall design’s material selection, we opted for simple materials such as cast-in-place concrete, marine board, and stainless steel, complemented by extensive whitespace. This approach allows the natural elements to take center stage within the space.

Finally, this project has prompted reflections on the necessity of space. Whether for residential or office purposes, maintaining a sense of restraint in space occupation and leaving ample room for nature may well represent a more harmonious and symbiotic form for the future.
