Kyeokyeoi(KK2), a bakery specializing in croissants, got its name from how pastry dough is piled up in layers. The store only has a small space for take-out (20m2), so how it was viewed from the outside was crucial. As the name suggests, the space also aimed to visualize layers.
In order to focus on croissants themselves and, at the same time, create multiple layers, we used glass. Croissants are displayed at the top of the croissant stand made of glass while images that combine Claes Oldenburg’s "pastry case" work and KK2’s croissant are UV-printed on the lower section.
Each image is divided in pieces to fit the size of the glass stands and printed with halftone dots effect so that people can also see images in the back as overlapped. The glass stands are placed obliquely to add more depth to the space and enable the divided images to be seen as one complete image at a specific point.
The entire space is designed in a minimal manner in order to emphasize the croissants and graphic images. Storage closets on the walls are arranged to have layers in a similar flow as the glass stands, and a bench on the opposite side is also made in a concise, floating shape without any legs. The use of achromatic plaster materials overall on top of a white background forms a contrast against sleekness of glass and, at the same time, is designed to make croissants stand out more.
