The Starter is an infill development consisting of a single-family residence and a new 3-story duplex on a sloping site. The duplex lifts above the site creating a building that hovers above the landscape. Exterior decks along the east side provide outdoor space. The units are nested within each other with the bedrooms on the second level. The open plan living areas for each unit connect directly to outdoor spaces. This creates a unique experience for each unit. One unit is grounded to the site with outdoor spaces that feel protected and intimate while the other unit feels more open with an expansive deck that takes in views across the canyon. A terraced outdoor space connects the duplex to the site and the existing house. This acts as a threshold between the public and private realm. This project strategically layers efficient living space and ample outdoor space with architecture that is progressive yet integrated into the site and community.
