THE HAVEN PROJECT
CANCER HOSPITAL
Cancer is a widespread and often feared disease because It can affect all people, old and young, healthy and unhealthy, and because of the harsh treatment course and the sometimes deadly outcome. Consequently, being diagnosed and living with cancer bring many unpleasant psychological emotions and reactions alongside physical side effects from the treatment and illness. The project aimed to design an oncology hospital that would follow the aspects of healing architecture
The initial organizing approach was to disperse the major departments and hospital services into individual blocks these blocks would sit porous and distinct so that it becomes a more manageable and direct flow of functions are done literally through the major internal core “the bridge”. The main atrium will guide patients onto two primary services that the typical visiting patient would require: 1. The outpatient department 2. The diagnosis and tests dept. The vertical circulation too will happen from the main atrium, the vertical stacking and circulation are influenced by the spaces below it. Each stacked volume is correlated to the volume above or below it.
The entirety of the whole building is divided into seven blocks and overlook green spaces Inbetwwen them and also welcomes fresh air into the building as it sits perpendicular to The predominant wind direction in the site. Maximum daylight is brought into the buildings Through the periphery of the blocks via These interstitial green spaces.
Courtyards enable visual connection of spaces and interaction spaces. The green spaces that are intended to this design would provide safe heaven and relaxing spaces to patients and hopefully be a distraction to the busy hospital logistics and also leave lesser building footprint. The back of each block has stepped balconies that will foster gardens so that there will be a touch of greenvthroughout the building even vertically
The concept of healing architecture was followed throughout the design process and the proposed design will perform best in functionality and will leave a positive impact on the minds of the users of the building.
