MALQAF
“The MALQAF is an Egyptian vernacular archetypal device that traps the wind into the building. It has been used as a viable solution to ensure natural ventilation”
Informal settlements (Slums) represent a universal phenomenon, which many countries suffer from worldwide and Egypt is no exception, This phenomenon is closely linked to the causes behind Egypt’s housing problem. Manshiyet Nasser is one of the 28 slums in Egypt which is informally built on hilly desert land. Thus, slums areas and neighborhoods develop with no access to public services and utilities or decent healthcare and no building safety. Therefore, developing this areas using a flexible units with low tech. systems is a must.
• Project location: Mansheyet Naser, Cairo, Egypt
• Project type: Residential
•Total surface area per unit (footprint): 90 sq.mt
Teamwork perspective & objectives:
Bioclimatic design (elements & studies) - CO2 emissions reduction - Net-zero Energy, by Energy production that equals to Energy consumption - Low tech Systems & devices - Renewable energy exploitation: PV modules – Solar water heater – Solar oven - Mainly putting in consideration: Labor – Budget – Local affordability - Local materials - Applicability & finance with detailed budget analysis for every single used element - How it will be ready for real execution by Stewardship, businessmen & others like government - Applicable solution for slums and lack of affordable housing not just an architecture solution - Infrastructure, sanitation & electricity - Ventilation & lighting systems (Low tech smart solutions like using insulation) - Roof solution (concrete or corrugated sheets) & thinking of it as a main effective element - Gray & waste water treatment & reuse (with landscape integration & purification tanks)
