The intervention carried out concerns the acoustic improvement, control of natural lighting, and refurbishment of the room called Common Room, located inside the Collegio Carlo Alberto in Piazza Arbarello 8, former headquarters of the Faculty of Economics and Business of Turin.
The building, in 2014 underwent renovation and the conclusion had been reached to enhance the Common Room, bringing it back to Ing. Bonicelli's completion project of the 1930s, which included the closure of the building's internal courtyard. At that time, therefore, the central glazed skylight was restored and a wall decoration inspired by Bonicelli's design, which was never realized. The current intervention aims to solve the lighting and acoustic problems encountered for the Common Room in order to ensure high levels of quality and visual and acoustic well-being of the spaces.
The design of the wall decoration was revisited to harmoniously integrate the new acoustic panelling into the hall, without losing the evocation of the Bonicelli scheme, but simplifying its lines and palpating the contemporary intervention.
The painting of the walls and the vaulted portion of the ceiling was done in a white shade, thus maintaining the current color of the hall. The insertion of pleated curtains in the glazed skylight shielded the light, greatly improving the quality of lighting in the hall.
The intervention included the insertion of acoustic panels on the walls of the Common Room, keeping the plaster frame decoration only in the outermost level.
Different detail alternatives were explored through the evaluation of different scenarios in order to ensure high acoustic comfort of the spaces. At the end, we focused on the scenario that allows to come closest to the proportions of the reference (the Bonicelli's cross-sectional design), proposing the solution with smooth paneling without applied cornice. Such paneling turns out to be the cleanest solution, which re-proposes in a more abstract and simplified way the design imagined for the hall.
The panels are placed separately from the upper wire framing, avoiding interference with the crowning cornice.
