In Middelkerke, a compact school building located a stone's throw from the coastline was designed to house a primary and secondary school for special education. Existing buildings on the site were demolished and replaced by residential units and the new school, which features a cascade of varying volumes including the main building, a hangar and a greenhouse. In keeping with Westendelaan vernacular, the arched main entrance is located on the street, drawing attention to its presence in the community. The sloping façade echoes the undulating shapes of the dunes, and its glazed tile plinth nods to the stately art deco façades of the promenade.
On the ground floor, communal areas are integrated and linked to the playground and sports field. The refectory and secondary school classrooms are located on the first floor, accessed via an internal staircase or the second playground, located on the roof of the hangar, which is additionally equipped with an external staircase. On the top floor, the primary school is equipped with patios and skylights that bring in daylight and create a division between the classrooms. Perpendicular to this building, the industrial hangar is equipped with workshops, whose roof, reached via an external staircase, has been converted into a playground for the secondary school and extended with a conservatory.
