Architect:EMBRACING NATURE, ENRICHING FUTURE
Location:Sangkat Khmuonh, Khan Sen Sok, Phnom Penh, Cambodia; | ;View Map
Project Year:2022
Category:Universities
This project is envisioned as a campus of tomorrow that embraces nature and human connections. Passive design strategies are holistically employed across different scales in response to the challenging tropical climate.
In relation to the overall planning and building form, most of the spaces around the campus are naturally ventilated so as to reduce on the use of energy and provide better wellness for the users. The building orientation is north-south axis to minimize direct heat gain.
The design embraced the challenges of the climate to create a variety of outdoor learning spaces that are sheltered from the elements and still comfortably naturally-ventilated. This result in inviting learning spaces bathed in daylight and surrounded by lush greenery.
Within the central spine, two large atrium spaces maximize air movement, natural light and visual connection between floors. It is an essential green relief space that all students would closely experience.
The circulation at the lower communal decks are planned to be fluid to enable more social interaction and a great sense of outdoor. These variety of green spaces are integrated with the common areas and facilitates intuitive wayfinding in the campus.
The project maximises the use of natural and local materials to minimize the building’s carbon footprint. Natural materials such as locally sourced bamboo, bricks, laterite stones are incorporated with the landscape and façade for materiality and texture.
The arrival porch is a key highlight that fuses with the landscape and expresses the timber texture in a reinforced concrete shell structure. The use of bamboo as form work is also extensively carried throughout the campus, in the form of planter boxes and wall finish.
Overall, the campus demonstrates a progressive approach in balancing a myriad user and environment challenges, to provide a nature-centric campus in the tropics. Please check our video: https://youtu.be/mW6gGRy-CtU
