As social design lab, Dutch artist and innovator Daan Roosegaarde and his team of designers and engineers connect people and technology in artworks that improve daily life in urban environments, spark imagination and fight the climate crisis. We create poetic urban stories, as pioneers for the liveability of our future landscapes. Clean air, clean water, clean energy, and now clean space are our new values.

The purpose of the light monument is to raise awareness that Jews, Roma and Sinti lived throughout the Netherlands and that the people who were persecuted, deported and murdered during the Second World War were locals or neighbors. The monument, consisting of 104,000 luminescent memorial stones to represent the 104,000 victims, was designed by Studio Roosegaarde, commissioned by the National Committee.

Stones are important in both the Jewish memorial tradition and in Roma and Sinti culture. Daan Roosegaarde and his team have used this tradition as inspiration. The luminescent memorial stones are absorbed with fluorescent pigments and light up under the influence of invisible ultraviolet light. Every few seconds you see the stones radiate a blue color which extinguishes again: like a breath in light.

On January 27, 2020, it is seventy-five years ago that Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp, the international symbol of the Holocaust, was liberated. This temporary light monument is dedicated to the Dutch Holocaust victims in the municipality they were deported from. In Rotterdam the monument can be seen once in its total size, with 104,000 luminescent memorial stones lit up on the banks of the Maas where the victims of Rotterdam were collected and deported at the time.

RAINBOW STATION connects the Amsterdam Central Station with space technology to create the largest artificial rainbow in the world.
Through a new liquid crystal technology developed for research on exoplanets, RAINBOW STATION takes the exact shape of the 125 year old historic station roof. RAINBOW STATION can be seen every day for a brief moment within one hour after sunset. The light and colour let fifty million travellers a year experience a magical moment at night.

Starting point for the collaboration between Daan Roosegaarde and Adrian van Hooydonk (Senior Vice President BMW Group Design) and their team of designers were inspiring dialogues about the new space which the future car is becoming. Autonomous driving vehicles need a strong interaction and connectivity between humans, vehicles and their surroundings in order to flawlessly navigate cities. As we are facing more complex times this connectivity principle is also key for human interaction in today’s societies. Roosegaarde’s installation addresses this theme with new creativity and imagination, to show the importance of human connectivity and interaction.

SYNC by Roosegaarde is an immersive art installation in which you create your own space. The artwork is a landscape of light where visitors can create their own favorite space, connect with others and visualize their ‘sense of place’. The artwork shows contour lines which become visible by walking over a flexible membrane surface having laser scanning light underneath it. Your presence physically pushes the membrane down to the floor which therefore reveals lines of light. Where you walk a circle of blue light surrounds your presence, interacting with your behavior. With more people the artwork creates shared spaces of light, making new interactive connections between people. Although high-tech, the artwork feels intuitive, with jelly-fish type of shapes occur and disappear. Accompanying the artwork is a special music soundscape, created by Berlin-based musical partnership “Tale of Us”.

Art inspires us to think about the future of society in a new way. The artwork SYNC not only shows the individual impact on the landscape but also how crucial our interaction is, making us feel our joint responsibility for a sustainable future. Adrian van Hooydonk: “Collaborations with designers and artists are a very valuable source of inspiration for me and my team. The creative exchange with Daan Roosegaarde and his approach encouraged us to research and experiment with new forms of interaction.”

VAN GOGH PATH is the light emitting bicycle path which charges at day-time and glows at night. VAN GOGH PATH is made of thousands twinkling stones inspired by Vincent Van Gogh ‘Starry Night’. The location of the VAN GOGH PATH is the place where Van Gogh lived in 1883-1885 in Nuenen NL and Eindhoven. VAN GOGH PATH celebrates this cultural heritage and connects it with innovation and wonder.
