Fala Atelier has crafted a small house in Lisbon that boldly defies banality. Known as 087, the three-level space showcases a complete disregard for geometric symmetry. Inside is a canvas of small yet impactful architectural gestures—from sloping ceilings to curved walls, lofty chimneys and episodic double heights.

On the ground floor, an open living area opens to the garden, carefully concealing circulation and secondary spaces behind a subtle wall. Upstairs, a central hallway becomes the organising spine, leading to an attic accessed by a spiral staircase.

While each level boasts distinct spatial characteristics, the unity of the project lies in a rich interplay of colours and coats of paint. White and dark blue stripes can be found on window shutters, in the kitchen and on cabinets. Dark green circles are cut out on doors, and a dotted carpet of timber flooring is repeated on every level, acting as the unifying element.

The home’s two facades stand in playful contradiction to each other. The street side is ordered, with a grid of windows adorned by a rich marble cornice. On the flip side, the rear facade revels in absurdity and lightness, with a glass wall interrupted by a blue column and scattered marble elements. Striped chimneys rise above the sloped roof, adding a touch of vertical sophistication to the eclectic ensemble.

In the Rousseau-like back garden, mirrors strategically placed reflect fragments of the rear facade and the interior. The result is a surreal experience, where images split and multiply, only adding to the peculiarity of the house.

A residence that refuses to be confined by convention, Fala showcases a playful exploration of the architectural language. The result is a collection of compelling fragments that come together to form a residence that refuses to conform to the ordinary.
