In Madrid‘s historic Barrio de las Letras, Armesto Rooms is a vibrant newcomer to the city’s traditional landscape. Formerly a modest hostel welcoming guests since the 1970s, this space has undergone a remarkable renovation.

The creative force behind the hotel’s transformation is Febrero Studio who are known for some incredible homes and apartments across Spain. In redesigning the property, they’ve challenged the traditional concept of hotels and guesthouses, infusing it with nostalgia without succumbing to cliché.

“When it comes to renovating and updating one of these businesses, it is impossible to disassociate oneself from the romantic world surrounding the concept of tourism in the second half of the 20th century, especially in Europe and America,” explains the studio, shedding light on their design approach.

Upon entering Armesto Rooms, guests are greeted by a purposefully moody and arrestingly dark reception area. The intentional lack of colour, along with a floor-length curtain enveloping the perimeter, creates a dramatic experience, resetting the senses as guests cross the threshold into the rooms.

Drawing back the curtain and stepping into your room, the striking colour and natural light herald a welcome contrast. Vivid tiles on the floor, walls, and ceiling extend beyond the bathroom, forming a prominent entrance that delineates the space.

There are three types of rooms, each featuring different chromatic ranges in fabrics, paintings, and bathroom tiles. The colour combinations are so on point—give me the navy blue and orange room any day! Bold yet balanced, the colours are complemented by neutral carpet, light-painted walls and furniture that’s simple, modern and functional.

Armesto Rooms is a modern and stylish retreat, where every detail has been thoughtfully considered. The refurbished rooms encourage memorable, playful and immersive experiences that will no doubt leave a lasting impression.
