Uchida Design designed the overall interior of the clubhouse and the entrance lobby area of luxury condominium “Fleur Pavilia” in Hong Kong. The aqua-sculpture “Dancing Water” welcomes residents with soft water flow giving a sense of relief at the ground floor main entrance. The subdued tone was chosen for calm and composed space. Our intention of introducing “Dancing Water” was to create an environmental art that reaches people’s mind. Along with the sound of quiet water flow, the inhabitants step into the first border – a wooden lattice gate for their sanctuary. Then the light wall of the elevator lobby drops residents a hint the image of bright flower pavilion view on the clubhouse floor.

Underneath three condo towers as communal space for residents, the clubhouse includes gymnasium, function rooms, a library and so on. Among them, the most significant feature of the project is a lush garden with plentiful plants at the center, the corridor space surrounds it and the clubhouse facilities are arranged around the outermost. We aimed to create an environment that connects people and nature making use of this beautiful garden feature while creating clear yet soft divisions between shared and private space.

A traditional Japanese house has an area called “engawa”, the so-called edge of the house and used as a type of veranda that usually faces a courtyard. It has the role to connect the inside of the house with the outside. Accordingly, we considered the corridor space which encloses the garden as engawa, then the space becomes to merge the outdoor landscape and plays a role in connecting each facility. Such engawa is the borderland hence the basic design should be simple and neutral, but at the same time, the environmental design is also an essential element. Therefore we presented it basic, simple and minimal space as a “canvas”, while furniture and art being laid out in major space as a “painting”, and see them as the overall landscape.

The design of partitions and borders were another keys, we believe they are one of the most important elements of spatial recognition of human being. We tried not to design them being too solid and closed but designed more flexible to connect softly with the public area and the garden outer. Specifically, we applied the concept from our representative work of tearooms, creating soft and see-through partition walls using bamboo lattice and Japanese washi paper. For its translucent feature, it takes natural light during the day and glows like a floating Japanese lantern at night, casting weaving pattern shadows. Technically, we brought Japanese craftsmen for bamboo weaving and installing washi on the wall, as a result, it created the space of craftsmanship for the residents.

Designing the “Gate” was to create a border and it facilitated zoning as a soft division. We adopted many forms from organic elements to embody our “paintings”, such as Japanese traditional “thin ice” pattern for a fixed wall and a chandelier, and form of a “tree trunk” or a motif of “flower” for furniture pieces.

The design gives concepts a form and our task is to optimally combine practical aspect with emotive aspects. Because it is the place where many residents live comfortably and together, rich yet functional public space is required. We embodied the design by resonating the relations between the garden and inner space, and we believe it brought a lush oasis of tranquil city living.
