The building is based on a design by British architect Terry Pawson, who won the competition in 2006. In 2009 ArchitekturConsult and the Linz office Archinauten were entrusted with the implementation and detailed planning for the interior and open space, light and acoustics and the interior design.
From a cultural point of view, the new music theater is an extremely important project for Linz. The building of the Linz Opera will be erected at the Volksgarten, on the site of the former Blumauerplatz.
This new cultural building will offer the opportunity for a significant and positive improvement of this inner-city area. The surrounding urban landscape and the adjacent park play an important role in the design and orientation of the music theater. The relationship between music theatre, city and park, as well as the interaction of foyer and auditorium represent an important point of the project.
The entrance foyer, which is accessed directly from the park, houses the box office, the shop and the café. It also allows access to the individual foyer and event areas. On the one hand, there is the Studio Theater and the Bruckner Hall on the floor below. The wide entrance foyer opens up the auditorium and the break foyer on the upper floor via a spacious main staircase. The auditorium’s parquet floor has been raised half a story above the foyer to create a threshold separating theatrical functions from daytime public activities.
