Summer 2015: A pursuit of knowledge and cultural enrichment led me to the remarkable Shibaozhai Pagoda, a gem along the shores of the Yangtze River in China's Chongqing Municipality. As part of my Chinese study abroad program, this excursion was more than a mere visit; it was an immersive experience into China's profound history and rich traditions.
The Shibaozhai Pagoda is a 12-story wooden structure, ingeniously built without nails, and stands as a masterpiece of Chinese architecture. Dating back to the Qing Dynasty, the pagoda is perched on a steep hill and is often referred to as 'The Pearl of the Yangtze.' A red pavilion hugs the cliff face, leading visitors upward through its levels, each adorned with intricate carvings and artwork that tell tales of Chinese folklore and ancient wisdom.
My visit to China was also met with a rigorous study at the famed Tsinghua University where I studied Chinese Language and Culture. I met many students who shared quite a few of the same passions I held. More than anything I hope to one day return to China to learn more about their culture and how the modern Chinese people feel about the world.
