Real estate developer and operator Brookfield Properties announces the launch of two public pavilions at the 2024 London Festival of Architecture (LFA). The pavilions, “Radial”, designed by Foster + Partners and “Squiggle” by NEON, are located at the plazas outside Principal Place and Citypoint, respectively. Designed to enhance the public realm around two of Brookfield Properties’ key London office buildings, the pavilions provide occupiers and surrounding communities with new ways to engage with the spaces while drawing in new visitors.
Designed as landmarks, the pavilions are inspired by themes of circularity, community and sustainability. Responding to the LFA’s overarching theme of “Reimagine”, they utilise everyday materials in innovative ways, encouraging reflection on material recycling, reuse, and climate change.
“Radial”, designed by Foster + Partners, is a space for pause and reflection. Constructed from reused and recycled construction materials, including plastic bottles and scaffolding, the pavilion features a radial pattern of flags made from 100% recycled waste. These hang above curved wooden benches and are coloured in tones of red, blue and white, according to a grading system developed by the British scientist and Professor Climate Science at the University of Reading Ed Hawkins, which reflects the earth’s rising temperature over the past 100 years.
“Radial” builds on Brookfield Properties’ prior collaboration with Foster + Partners during the 2023 EcoCity summit through its ongoing reflection on sustainability. The project is an exemplar of the practice’s approach to nurturing emerging talent, with young apprentices being a key part of the design team. Since 2018, Foster + Partners has been delivering a range of apprenticeships that offer an alternative route to gaining qualifications, by combining practical experience in the workplace with academic training.
