IJORA-BADIA COMMUNITY CENTER IN LAGOS, NIGERIA.

PROJECT OVERVIEW:  This project involves the dissertation and design of a user oriented community center within the urban community of Ijora-Badia. Sequel to the research , study and development of urban renewal scheme for a fast-deteriorating and congested slum area (Ijora-Badia) lying in the heart of Lagos metropolis; this project was personally chosen by me as the ethos of the studio assignment required that each student  propose a community infrastructure that would improve the well-being and lifestyle of its resident.  In response to the task, I developed the following objectives based on the analysis of the site  as well as notable case studies within the scope  and physical phenomenon of the project.

PROJECT LOCATION

EXISTING LAYOUT OF PROJECT AREA:

The specific area of study Ijora- Badia, one of the suburbs in the Apapa Local Government of Lagos State; located in the Southern fringe of the Lagos Metropolitan area is a very underdeveloped area with unavailable or depreciated infrastructural facilities. It is bounded in the north by a swampy land, in the west by a large canal, in the south by an industrial zone and by the major Apapa road in the east.  URBAN RENEWAL LAYOUT OF PROJECT AREA:

The project area is a local community of roughly 130,000 residents occupying a land area of 17sqkm but the selected area for the urban renewal scheme  occupied a land area of 1.07sqkm with a population estimate of 65,000. With better roads and residential blocks arranged in walk-able cul-de-sacs neighborhoods, I  chose the project site at the central business district – an area that is situated at the geographic center of the project area, to facilitate maximum accessibility from each neighborhood.

Socialization:  to replicate society, to imbue local and national culture and to promote citizenship

User Comfort and Satisfaction: to design a community center that emphasizes on users’ maximum satisfaction

Flexibility and Adaptability: to develop a design that is easily adaptable to changes in users’ needs and requirement.

Sustainability: to develop a design that is both socially and environmentally sustainable.
