Ikarus is a Hungarian bus manufacturing company specializing in the production of city, intercity and special buses. It was founded in 1895 as a blacksmith and carriage workshop in Budapest. In the 1980s, the plant's team reached an annual production volume of up to 12 thousand vehicles per year, which put the Ikarus plant among the largest bus manufacturers in Europe. The name "Ikarus" became a bus trademark after the Uri brothers' company, which produced cars and buses, was merged with the aircraft and auto parts manufacturer "Ikarus Gép és Fémgyár Rt" ("Ikarus Joint-Stock Company for the Production of Machines and Metals"). In the name of the latter, "Ikarus" comes from the name of the mythical character Icarus.
