Tianhua Landscape:The “West Bund Orbit” is the first art and fashion landmark on the public art waterfront of the West Bund Financial City and an important viewing point overlooking both sides of the Huangpu River. The landscape design seamlessly integrates with the architecture, comprising the front “Orbit Wishl” drop-off area, surrounding artistic “Water Heage”green parks, the “Orbit Flowerring Steps” that ascend around the building, and the “Starry Eye” 360-degree rooftop garden with views of the Huangpu River. It has become a unique outdoor public art display platform by the Huangpu River, contributing to the development of the West Bund into one of Asia’s most beautiful art corridors.

Moment Seizing
The “West Bund Orbit” at Xuhui Riverside has been standing for over six months since its completion last winter, hosting various top-tier events and grand shows. It is the first new art and fashion landmark on the public art waterfront of the West Bund Financial City.
As the landscape design team for the Orbit project, we braved the cold winter and rainy season, avoided replants and brick repairs during exclusive events, and waited for the flowers and plants to bloom. Finally, we can simply document this whirling and wave-like creative process. Since we missed the initial excitement at completion, let’s seize this scorching summer.▽平面图 Plan
Wild Exploration:English Garden, Plant Hunter
At first, we didn’t know the concept of the building and only began conceptual planning for the plants around the theme of the “English Garden.” We mapped the building space to the scenes of an English garden, dividing it into five major plant-themed areas: “Wooded Grove” on the first floor, “Blossoming Wilds” on the second floor, “Leafy Forest” on the third floor, “Silver Shore” on the fourth floor, and “Arch of Time and Space” on the fifth floor.
The richness and abundance of the “English Garden” are characterized by the “plant hunters” collecting rare and exotic plants worldwide for display. These flower shows were often closely integrated with the most advanced and cool maintenance techniques and architectural “containers” of their time.
Therefore, in Xujiahui, a melting pot of Eastern and Western cultures, we treated the building as a hunter’s container in the forest. Along the double-helix ramp, the landscape planting was divided into “Chinese native export plant varieties” and “Western imported plant varieties,” finally converging at the rooftop garden “Time and Space Reunion.”
Due to the need for continuous flower border replacement in subsequent operations and exhibitions, making the story less intuitive and requiring closer integration with the building concept, we embarked on new explorations. However, the garden habitat’s scene has been preserved.

Cosmos Roaming: The Interstellar Journey of Seeds
When we officially began the overall landscape plan, we learned that the initial concept of the building was inspired by the “blooming cherry of Long Museum”. Coinciding with the completion of the building’s facade lighting adjustment, the “star trail” effect sparked everyone’s imagination.
Thus, we further conceived: Universe in a Nutshell – The Interstellar Journey of Seeds.
Fourteen years ago, Heatherwick’s “Seed Museum” at the UK Pavilion of the Shanghai World Expo became a cherished memory for countless people. Though it was a “temporary building,” with some imagination, it seems like it “bloomed” today on the opposite shore at Xuhui Riverside.

Under the “star trail” winding building facade, we hoped to plan an interstellar journey through time and space for the “seeds” to carry on this memory. We aimed to collect or recreate components from the “Seed Museum” to create a “Seed Nebula” art installation at the main entrance drop-off area. This would also serve as ambient lighting and scientific display in the planting beds along the floating double-helix ramp, becoming “seed travel pods” traversing the night sky star trail. Due to the inability to collect the components, the “seed travel pods” project was shelved. However, the star trail Orbit concept continues.

River Calming:West Bund Orbit
With the finalization of the building’s name “Orbit” and the unveiling of the interior water vortex design, what was initially intended as a temporary drop-off area will now be permanently retained. The owner hopes for a hotel-style drop-off area that can complement the Long Museum across the street. Thus, a vortex water feature with H2O elements in the foreground has become the focal space.

Orbit Wish
Renowned interior designers depicted “Whirling Water, Soaring Phoenix” through creative and visionary designs. Meanwhile, we noticed that citizens affectionately refer to it as the “West Bund Cake.” Thus, we whimsically named this front water feature the “Wishing Swirl”—make a wish before having cake.
After multiple rounds of form evolution, we finally adopted an upward swirling design that mirrors the building’s interior. Water flows from the center, following a path that echoes the building’s star trail; polished stone surfaces scatter the building into countless virtual images, flowing in the pulsating starlight.
The final stone CNC carving was completed following fluid simulations, and the construction and assembly were guided by 3D printing.

Water Hedge “Dun Dun Dun”
To enhance the “Orbit,” we collaborated with the owner and a flower border consultant to create the abstract “Water Hedge”—an “artistic water hedge.” By sculpting the green hedge, we simulated the “Metaball” properties of water droplets, achieving a dynamic sense of water flow merging, pushing, and rolling together.
Water Droplet “Metaball” Properties:
“Metaball” is a force field that gives water droplets their spherical shape. The density value of a Metaball can be increased by the force fields of nearby droplets, resulting in displacement properties—adapting and changing shape around the Metaball. When the density field reaches a specific threshold, it forms bridges of organic surface tension between Metaballs. Each Metaball expands and influences one another.

Orbit Flowering Stairs
It’s like the “swirl cake” with layers of “bia—ji—” cream. The spiral flower steps are a crucial guiding space, gray space, buffer platform space, and microclimate green space in the integration of architecture and landscape.
This area also represents the most complex boundary of the entire landscape interface: it requires addressing the connections with steps and curtain wall structures; studying technical challenges such as the eaves drip width, soil load, and drainage; and ensuring the harmonious correspondence of planting beds and railing curves on each layer.

Starry Watch
“Starry Eye” is a 360-degree rooftop garden offering a panoramic view of the Huangpu River, serving as an aerial public art display platform by the riverside. The landscape integrates with two architectural arches to form an observation platform, with four non-linear flower beds further fractalizing to create a 500-square-meter open lawn, making it suitable for art exhibitions and banquet events. A magical “green pupil” gazes at the starry sky, adding a touch of cybernetic feel to Shanghai, the “Magic City.” The “Starry Eye” rooftop garden and the “Orbit Wish” water feature form a visual and spiritual connection between the Huangpu River and the sky.
