Transfiguration church / Kizhi island / Karelia

Kizhi Pogost  is a historical site dating from the 17th century on Kizhi island. The pogost is the area inside a fence which includes two large wooden churches (the 22-dome Transfiguration Church and the 9-dome Intercession Church) and a bell-tower. In 1990, it was included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites.

Transfiguration church is a main part of ensemble and was built in 17th century. And all domes of this church covered by wooden roof shingles called "lemekh". Using a 500mm Tokina lens, i was able to demonstrate a uniqueness of each shingle with marks of carpenter's axe.

It is also an opportunity to see how the surface of aspen shingles turns different colors depending on the angle of refraction and the aging of the wood.
