The 25th edition of the International Garden Festival, titled The Ecology of Possibility, is now open to the public. On the occasion of its 25th anniversary, Ève De Garie-Lamanque, Artistic Director, invited designers to imagine the future of the garden. This year’s edition, which will run until October 6, showcases 27 contemporary gardens, including 6 new ones, as well as a permanent installation (Pergola) and 2 extramural projects (FolkFLORE and Repairia / Riparia).
Theme | The Ecology of Possibility
It seems to us that the garden of today (be it private or public) has a social responsibility. Sustainable, it preserves and supports biodiversity. Plants are rigorously selected after considering the specific needs and behaviours of each species and how they interact. The characteristics of the site to be developed, and their evolution over the seasons, are also carefully studied. In light of these ideologies and present circumstances, is the future of the garden a united one? Is it based on a relational, cross-disciplinary approach? We would like to wager that the future of the garden will be forged from genuine dialogue with the living.

Bruissement d’ailes
Bernard Chapuis,Georges Vafias
法国 France
Bruissement d’ailes highlights the need to get back to basics, to be as close as possible to our natural environment. Climate change and the destruction of natural habitats—these are the new conditions that the world’s temperate zones are now facing. Fragility, imbalance and uncertainty are now the order of the day, requiring each and every one of us to adapt to a changing climate by doing everything possible to temper the harmful effects of rising temperatures, by rethinking our behaviour, by battling heat islands, and by using new or traditional ways to address the problem of water and shade scarcity. Bruissement d’ailes encourages visitors to rekindle their relationship with nature and to pause for a moment in the shade of three elaborate sails, like outstretched wings over a waterlily pond.

Couleur Nature
Vanderveken, Architecture + Paysage
Saint-Lambert, QC, Canada
Couleur Nature is a curious study into the roles gardens play in our society, comparing the great swaths of utilitarian lawn and our individual leisure devices (with poor social and ecological indicators) with contemplative gardens (with high reflexive and ecological indicators). The installation does not attempt to compare nature with culture or the natural with the artificial. In fact, it strives to juxtapose the two visions of the garden, demonstrating the absurdity of a dominant monoculture which, in general terms, has no use apart from simply enabling humans to experience satisfaction watering and mowing their lawn and filling their swimming pools on a perpetual cycle that contributes to the gradual decline of our biodiversity.

Besides the surprise of moving from a sanitized, watered-down outdoor space to the dishevelled, ever-changing beauty of the indoor space, Couleur Nature prompts visitors to reconsider their relationship with time and the environment. Coming together around a swimming pool or manicured lawn is not the same as coming together in a garden – the environments provoke different activities, different states of mind and different paces.

The year of the first International Garden Festival, priority plant species were identified for habitat protection in the St. Lawrence Vision 2000 Action Plan. One of the species was the Anticosti Aster (symphyotrichum anticostense), a cross between New York (symphyotrichum novi-belgii var. novi-belgii) and Rush (symphyotrichum boreale) Asters. 25 years later, despite habitat protections, the Anticosti and Rush Asters remain imperiled species. This garden is posed as a question on the past and future. If New York and Rush Asters crossed again, what would that look like? What possible futures can be sown by these species’ interactions? As people walk through this garden, they are immersed in drifts of Asters, held back by woven dune fencing. The fencing also acts as a path that asters (and other spontaneous vegetation) can grow up between. Repeated foot traffic along the path will help define how far the plants can drift.

Histoires à tisser
Shaza Bazzi, Maëlle Bellemin,the UQAM’sDESS en design
Montréal, QC, Canada
Made in part of rope recuperated from the Augmented Groundsgarden, Histoires à tisser invites visitors to sit under its canopy and become rooted in the present moment. With two circular modules, it draws on what links us to each other, regardless of our backgrounds and origins. It becomes a safe harbour, where the threads of the past meet those of the present to weave new narratives. Visitors are invited to sit between two net meshes and let themselves get lost in the web of stories.

Pergola
Jérôme Lapierre Architecte
Montréal, QC, Canada
On the occasion of its twenty-fifth edition, the International Garden Festival asked Jérôme Lapierre Architecte to design a small pavilion to mark its entrance. Pergola offers a contemporary reimagining of the small garden structure traditionally used to provide shade and support for climbing plants. Made of thin walls of interwoven red oak slats, it seeks to celebrate and showcase the play of light and shadow in the surrounding gardens, creating a filter that reveals the true beauty of the site.

The potential of gardens should not be overlooked. It is simply huge. In such a densely populated and urbanized area such as Flanders, the fraction of land occupied by domestic or private gardens (of which there are approximately 2 million) is estimated to be 12%. That’s four times the total surface area of non-residential natural areas in the region. As such, as long as they are designed and maintained naturally, domestic gardens have the potential to help reduce the effects of climate change and halt the impoverishment of biodiversity, encouraging people to reconnect with nature.

This observation led to the recreation of a Belgian garden on the site of the International Garden Festival, Quebec. Extracted from the urban fabric of a medium-sized European city and implanted in Grand-Métis, the installation becomes a mise en abyme, a garden within a garden — an entirely new entity in the Canadian landscape.

Superstrata
设计者:mat-on
Italy
The installation’s pivotal concept is the rhizomatic system, as French theorists Deleuze and Guattari describe in their research, where hierarchies are substituted by horizontality enabling new ways of interchanging knowledge, connections, and possibilities. In this scenario, the proposal investigates the duality of human-nature: if we, as humans, feel the need to impose order on the world, nature defies fixed structures and boundaries. Extremely suitable to express this idea are geological maps. They portray intricate patterns through stratigraphic lines, symbolizing the non-linearity of nature and aligning with the concept of deterritorialization(Deleuze & Guattari) – the breaking away from fixed boundaries. Humans are far from achieving this. They need to analytically superimpose a conventional order.
