"Kamasan is one of the tourist villages located in Klungkung, Bali. This village is renowned for producing classical wayang paintings that narrate stories from wayang performances, also known as Kamasan paintings, created by the talented artists residing in the village of Kamasan. A brief history of Kamasan paintings reveals their emergence in the 15th or 16th century during the Gelgel Kingdom era in Bali, flourishing under the reign of King Waturenggong. Over time, art has evolved, influenced by Western aesthetics; however, Kamasan paintings have remained a focal point for traditional art, capturing the attention of art enthusiasts worldwide."
The reason I chose Kamasan paintings as a local theme is because, in my opinion, these paintings possess a uniqueness that cannot be found in any other region. These artworks also represent one of the national assets that should be preserved and nurtured. Additionally, I aim to introduce the art of Kamasan painting to a broader audience through my documentary photography project.
In the process of gathering information and data, we learned about these Kamasan paintings through discussions with several relatives, which we then expanded on by conducting research on the internet to form an idea of what we wanted to visualize. Upon arriving in Kamasan Village, we executed our project through an approach involving interaction with the local residents. Communication was, of course, crucial in obtaining various pieces of information and facilitating the progress of our documentary photography task. The photography session took approximately one day to capture the visuals we aimed for.
