This project is a liquor retail store, a joint venture between the Japanese brand Suntory and the Chinese brand Jieqiang, located on the first floor of the historic "Deyi Building." The design blends vintage, Shanghainese, and Japanese styles, honoring the architectural heritage while preserving its unique features. By incorporating iconic elements from the Japanese Suntory Brewery, our design embodies the spirit of cultural exchange between China and Japan. Additionally, the use of natural materials emphasizes our commitment to sustainability and evokes the nature-sourced alcoholic products of Suntory.
The project's door header is constructed from weather-resistant dark brown steel panels and combined with oversized floor-to-ceiling windows. This color palette and style blend with the historic building, evoking a vintage decorative aesthetic while enhancing the interior with increased natural light. The distiller is strategically placed at the entrance, creating a buffer zone while setting the tone of the space.
The circular bar on the first floor separates the cigarette cabinets, wine racks, and display space. The pairing of the sliding window with the cigarette cabinet evokes the scene and atmosphere of an old Shanghai tobacco store. The wine racks and bar are inspired by the barrels of Japanese distilleries, and the barrel-style wall-mounted display cabinets and landscape vignettes to restore the flavor of Japanese distilleries for customers.
We extensively used natural materials, especially for the furniture and the central circular bar counter, which is crafted from reclaimed oak previously used in whiskey barrels. This not only enhances the whiskey-themed atmosphere but also promotes the reuse of old materials, contributing to sustainability.
The interior is dominated by warm colors, and the staircase seems to be suspended in mid-air, casting dappled light and shadow, transitioning the space of the first and second floors.
The second floor is mainly designed for product display area and rest area. The design creates a spatial atmosphere by combining array and structure with light and shadow; the wine cabinet is laid out according to the wall, the bottom of the cabinet is suspended, and its lower part is paved with a layer of crushed stone; the level is partly hollow, and seats beside the fence can view the distiller from different angles; a variety of wines are divided by dark glass, which creates a different sense of texture as light and shadow overlap.
The display cabinets extend from the public area to the wine tasting area, and is combined with plant silhouette screens to define the space for customers. The space features a folding door that can be adjusted according to functional needs. When the folding door is opened, the wine tasting area is separated from the public space, creating an exclusive meeting area for VIP clients. When the door is retracted, it becomes a semi-open space, offering guests a wine tasting area.
