قَمَريّة
Qamarīyah
Qamariya” derived from the Arabic word “Qamar” meaning “moon” is an Arabic architectural element, traditionally used as part of a window set. The Qamariya, which is made using stained glass, allows the natural moon light to penetrate and beautifully illuminate a room without compromising privacy.
It is usually placed above an operable window, which would traditionally be covered with a wooden screen (Mashrabiya) itself. This way, rooms could be lit by natural light while still retaining an opacity that prevented strangers from seeing into the house.
