Gray Baynes + Shew Architects commissioned me to photograph the Grade II* listed St Giles House, 16 St. Giles, Oxford, where they recently carried out a programme of major refurbishment on behalf of St. John's College.
St Giles House was built in 1702 and is said to be the finest house in Oxford of that period. Previously known as "Judge's Lodgings" or the "Judges' House," between 1852 and 1965 it served as lodgings for assize judges on their visits to the city. The door in the rear elevation has a beautiful shell-shaped canopy, beneath which a cleverly constructed retractable lift has been installed in traditional looking steps as part of the refurbishment, allowing for disabled access.
The interior of the house contains an elaborate moulded plaster ceiling set over a fine wooden staircase with twisted balusters. The interiors photographed here are principally used by St. John's College for receptions and seminars.
