The latest brainchild of Gusto 54 with interiors brought to life by Wendy Haworth Studio, Stella restaurant brings a slice of mid-century Milan to West Hollywood. A seamless fusion of Italian charm and contemporary design, this two-level dining space evokes nostalgia while embracing modern sensibilities.
“Being our fourth partnership with Gusto 54, we have a shorthand when articulating the design,” says Wendy Haworth. Drawing inspiration from classic Italian kitchens and mid-century aesthetics, the restaurant exudes warmth and hospitality. Haworth aptly describes the concept as “Warm. Optimistic. Soulful,” a philosophy evident in every design element.
The central bar greets guests with a custom marble floor reminiscent of 1950s Milanese architecture. Shelving inspired by Italian architect Ico Parisi showcases a Calacatta Viola marble countertop, while vintage Italian-inspired light fixtures and seating enhance the ambience. Natural materials like timber, leather, and linen create a comfortable, inviting atmosphere.
Upstairs, 1950s-inspired maple panelling adds warmth to the walls. An internal staircase leads to the lower level, where walnut-panelled walls and terrazzo floors continue the mid-century Italian theme. The private dining area is a highlight, featuring high ceilings and elegant panelling. A mural depicting an Italian pastoral scene adorns the walls, complemented by striking 1970s Murano leaf chandeliers overhead.
On the lower level, an open kitchen with a chef’s counter allows diners to observe the culinary action. A glass-enclosed pasta room adds visual interest, highlighting the restaurant’s focus on Italian cuisine. The custom striped terrazzo floor in this area further reinforces the mid-century aesthetic.
Art plays a crucial role in Stella’s design, with an eclectic collection adorning the walls. Original oil paintings and antique etchings sit alongside Carlo Mollino prints, creating a gallery-like atmosphere that complements the overall design narrative.
Wendy Haworth explains the design philosophy: “We have endeavoured to craft an environment that pays homage to the enduring elegance of Italian design and feels like a place that has been a cherished part of the community for generations.” This approach is evident throughout the interior, from material selection to artwork curation.
We’ve seen our fair share of restaurants trying to capture that elusive Italian charm, and while some don’t quite get there, Stella nails it. Wendy Haworth Studio has taken everything we love about Italy—the warmth, the style, the passion for good food and even better company—and wrapped it up in a package that’s both nostalgic and excitingly new. The verdict? It’s amore.
