Othership, an immersive, social sauna and ice bath experience founded in Toronto, has opened the doors to its third location in New York’ Flatiron District. Othership’s one-of-a-kind space offers guided classes, free flows, and socials integrating breathwork, somatic movement, and live music. It creates an environment that embraces emotions and vulnerability, empowering people to be kind to themselves, adopt a healthy mindset, and build community. It’s a welcome addition to an urban environment that can often lead to stress and isolation.

Bent and his co-founders developed Othership as a third space where communities can come to foster real, meaningful connections free from alcohol. The team’s journey began in a backyard on a residential street prior to COVID-19, where they built a community around a homemade ice bath and sauna. Since then, they have launched two locations in Toronto and have amassed a major following with over 50,000 followers on social media and over 1,000 5-star reviews on Google. Demand across the border has led to Othership’s first two New York City outposts, with Flatiron opening in 2024, and a location in Brooklyn launching in 2025. Othership also has a world-renowned guided breathwork app with over 100,000 downloads.

Othership has raised more than $10 million in venture funding to date, with key backers including early investors in Headspace, as well as the founders of Soul Cycle, Daybreaker, and Shawn Mendes. The company’s founding team traveled the world to learn about and experience hot and cold therapy, practiced for millennia in Scandinavia, Russia, and across Asia. Othership is a modern and unique take on the science-backed routine that’s proven to reduce stress and inflammation, increase immunity, and even reduce the risk of cardiovascular events.

Othership is also one of the only spaces in North America that offers immersive emotional wellness programming against a hot and cold therapy backdrop. Othership’s awe-inspiring performance saunas are designed to provide a clean, fresh heat up to 190°F, with aromatic snowballs providing humidity that feels like 200°F. The custom-designed ice baths are kept as low as 32°F. Guided group classes fall into three categories (up, down, and all around for energy, relaxation, or emotional connection) and offer a variety of elements including breathwork, aromatherapy via essential oils, towel waving, and a curated soundscape designed for a desired effect. Longer evening socials feature louder music and guided conversations to encourage community-building. Alternatively, guests can drop-in to a free flow session to explore the many benefits of the hot and cold on their own time.

To bring the vision to life, the Othership team called on Futurestudio, led by founding principal Ali McQuaid Mitchell, to develop its overall creative direction for the physical spaces, and help guests immerse themselves in the experience. McQuaid Mitchell drew on the transformative power of nature, purposefully designing Othership as a sanctuary where guests can feel grounded and open to connecting with themselves and others. The first US location features a spacious performance sauna, ice baths for up to 16 journeyers in a private cold sanctuary room, and an amphitheater-style tea lounge where guests can gather around a central fireplace for socializing and warm conversation. It’s a beautifully-designed sanctuary where guests can connect without alcohol.
